Flag of the Kingdom of Hawaii 1816-1845

Some credit Captain Alexander Adams while others say it was Captain George Charles Beckley who designed this flag for King Kamehameha I. The number of stripes varied, but was standardized at eight after 1843, for the eight principal islands in the group and had stripes in the order red-white-blue .

On November 28, 1843, the Hawaiian Kingdom was recognized as an independence nation by Great Britain, and two years later on May 25, 1845 a revised national flag was unfurled at the opening of the Hawaiian legislature. The Hawaiian flag previous to 1845 differed only in the amount of stripes and also the arranging of the colors (white-red-blue).
